All part-time employees are entitled to a pro-rata bonus and weekly allowance from their employer whether or not they are employed elsewhere on a full-time or a part-time basis or in receipt of an old age pension.

Statutory bonus & weekly allowance entitlement for  pensioners in employment in receipt of an old age pension in Malta

Employers of pensioners in receipt of an old age pension are obliged to pay the statutory bonus and weekly allowance as they would pay full-time and part-time employees (see Full-Timer & Part-Timer Tabs on this page).

All employers are obliged to inform the Social Security Department of the bonus paid to their employee in receipt of an old age pension every time it is paid (usually in March, June, September and December or on termination of employment).  The Department is to be notified by way of a letter in order that any adjustments deemed necessary to the pensioner’s bonus are made directly by the department.

Taxable bonuses and allowances

Bonuses and allowances are included in the employee’s payslip and are taxable according to the applicable employee’s tax rates.

Hello, I started working from the month of January 2024. Am I entitled to the bonus of March 2024.
Please guide me! Thank you in advance!

    1. Rolan says:

The bonus of March 2024 is for the period October 2023 to March 2024. You are therefore entitled to a pro-rata bonus, from January to March 2024.

  2. Ewelina says:

    I am working full time.
How I can collect my bonus?

    1. Rolan says:

Bonus is payable to the employee by the employer. Self-Employed persons in Malta therefore get no bonuses.

  3. Janeis says:

If you stopped working and you stayed a month without a job will you get the December bonus. I stopped in October and started another job in November. Thanks

    1. Rolan says:

Yes you will get your December Bonus pro-rata from your new employer for the weeks worked from November to December. For more details on bonuses in Malta visit this page.

  4. Marina says:

Do the statutory bonus and weekly allowances change the amount of social security contributions deducted from the gross wage? The income tax deducted for March, June, September and December will be higher, but will the bonuses also affect how much N.I. is deducted from the wage for the same months?

    1. Rolan says:

The answer is NO. The NI deductions are calculated on the Basic Weekly Wage.

  5. Linda says:

Can you let me know if you receive the COLA Bonus in the probation period of your employment?

    1. Rolan says:

Yes all four Bonuses (March, June, SEptember and December) are due to the employee during the probation period.

  6. Kirsten says:

If say I have a full time job in the public sector and a part time job somewhere else, am I allowed for 2 pro-rata bonuses, one from the full time and another from the part time, for the same period? (eg in June am I eligible to receive my bonus from only the full time job or from both)

    1. Rolan says:

Bonuses of March, June, September and December are payable by the main employer. If you work also part-time you are entitled to pro-rata bonus from your part-time employer.

Hi! I’m in very strange situation, could you please help me? I’m working for a Maltese Company. I wasn’t paid this Bonus neither Allowances. I’ve been in this company since beggining of June 2012. Could you please help me calculate how much?

    1. Rolan says:

You are entitled to your Bonuses and Allowances by law. Check out this link for a list of these bonuses throughout the years and ask for them from your employer. If these are refused by your employer contact the Labour Office.

  8. Nen says:

Hi. I have been registered since January 2020. What amount of state bonus do I have to receive from my employer?

    1. Rolan says:

Your employer is obliged by law to give you, if eligible, 4 bonus during the year and the amounts are based on whether you are fulltime or parttime and whether you have worked a full year or not. For more information on how to work this out check our dedicated page

  9. Katrina says:

Is the government bonus taxable? My employer charged me taxes from the last three bonus. For example for March 2020 instead of the full bonus of €121.16 I got only a net after tax of €98.

    1. Rolan says:

Yes that is correct, bonuses in Malta paid to employees by the employer are taxable in the hands of the employee and this is to be recorded on the payslip.
