Next National Holiday – Sette Giugno – 7th June
The next National Holiday in Malta is Sette Giugno – 7th June.
The 7th of June is commemorated as Sette Giugno, which is a public holiday in Malta. Sette Giugno is a national day of remembrance that commemorates the riots that occurred in Valletta, Malta on 7 June 1919. During the riots, Maltese protesters demanded political and social reforms from the British colonial government. The riots resulted in the deaths of four Maltese protesters and the injury of dozens more. Sette Giugno is an important day in Malta’s history and is marked by various cultural events and activities.
The riots were a response to rising food prices and a demand for higher wages. The British authorities had refused to grant these demands, and tensions between the Maltese and the British had been escalating for some time. On the day of the riots, a peaceful demonstration turned violent when British troops fired upon the crowd, killing four and injuring many others. The event is considered a turning point in Maltese history, as it galvanized the push for independence from British rule.
Four Maltese persons, Manwel Attard, Karmnu Abela, Ġużè Bajada and Wenzu Dyer lost their lives during these riots.
